A Cat Story
Written by Bill Kline in March of 1998 for Jennifer.
Once there was a mother cat and her baby girl kitten.
They lived in a house at the top of a hill. One day Mama and
kitty went out to play. They went down from the top of the
hill to the valley below. There were many colored flowers in
the valley. Some were red, some
were yellow, and some were blue. The kitten went up to a red flower and started to smell it.
Then she opened her mouth and tried to bite off part of it.
The mother cat said, "Don't eat that, it will make you
sick!" But the kitty didn't listen. She kept chewing on
the flower. Then she got to the middle of the flower and it
tasted bad. She spit it out and began to meow loudly. Mama
said, "I told you not to eat that!" Her baby girl
said, "You were right, Mama! That was bad!"
The cats chased each other and played
in the valley. The kitty saw a yellow flower with a bee flying near it. She went
to see what the bee was doing. The mother cat said, "Watch
out for that bee, he might sting you!" The kitten
swatted at the bee with her paw, but she missed it. She tried
again and missed again. She turned around and said, "It's
OK Mama, we're playing tag." Then the bee stung her on
her tail. "Ouch!", said the kitty. "You were
right Mama, that bee just stung me on my tail!"
The cats kept running around and playing in the valley. Soon
it started to rain. The Mama cat said, "Let's go baby,
it's starting to rain. It's not safe to play in the valley
when it's raining!", but the kitten didn't listen. She
was playing with a frog in a patch of blue flowers. Mama started walking up the hill.
She thought her kitten was right behind her, but she was
still playing in the valley.
Then it started to rain really hard. A little stream began to
flow through the valley from all the rain. The stream ran
right past where the kitty was playing with the frog. The
frog jumped into the stream and the kitty followed. She
floated down the stream. When Mama saw that her baby was not
following her home, she ran back to the valley. She saw the
kitten being pulled along by the water in the stream. "Help
me Mama, I can't get out of here!", cried the kitty. The
mother cat looked around and saw a tree branch that had
fallen in the grass. She grabbed it in her mouth and started
to run along the stream. The branch was bigger than the
mother cat and it was hard to carry. But the mother cat had a
plan to save her baby and she needed this big stick. Mama ran
as fast as she could. She caught up to where her baby was in
the stream then she ran ahead a little. She threw the branch
so it landed across the stream. When the kitten reached the
branch, she grabbed on to it and climbed out of the water.
"Wow Mama, that was scary!", said the kitten.
"Thanks for saving me! You were right again. Its not
safe in the valley when it's raining! You know everything
about this world!" The Mama cat said, "I don't know
everything but I know more than you. That's why you should
listen to what I say!" The kitty said, "From now
on, I will!" And so the two cats ran up the hill to go
home.
The End.
